How Jane Randall Transformed Her Niche Psychology Practice Using Strategy, Mission, Vision and Values

   Jane Randall

                Founder, Randall Therapy Centre

Jane is truly one of a kind in the private practice space.  Unlike standard practices that focus on quick, transactional care, the work Jane does is deeply relational and foundational.  She isn't just running a business—she is planting a garden, tending to the soil, and building deep, lasting community trust.  She provides exceptional clinical care to complex cohorts that so few others have the skill, dedication, or heart to navigate.

Jane's true genius zone lies in her visionary leadership, her passion for clinical mentoring, and her natural ability to inspire and guide early-career clinicians.  Beyond her clinical mastery, Jane is a courageous advocate who creates spaces that feel authentically safe, grounded, and deeply human.  Working alongside Jane and witnessing her commitment to changing the narrative in mental healthcare is nothing short of inspiring!

 INSIGHTS

Translating Corporate Experience to Small Business: After 18 years in a statewide charity organisation and 25 years as a clinical psychologist , Dr. Jane Randall successfully adapted structured business principles to launch and scale a private clinical psychology practice.

Practical Application of Strategy: Strategy shifted from a "top-down document"  to an operational mind map  and everyday decision-making framework —connecting long-term vision directly to frontline clinical care.

Attracting the Right Talent: Communicating authentic practice values publicly through social media and web channels attracted team members who aligned with the practice's mission.

The Challenge

For 18 years, Jane Randall operated within a large statewide charity organisation, building out a psychology service for complex cases . In that corporate environment, dedicated departments handled operational overheads—ranging from HR and finance to set government metrics and allocated budgets. When Jane established her own private practice in North Sydney, she found that her clinical expertise and client base was strong, yet she missed having a team to bounce business ideas off of.  Furthermore, Jane was hesitant about conventional corporate strategy concepts. In past corporate settings, strategy often felt like top-down "BS"—heavy documents filled with vague mission statements delivered by people disconnected from frontline clinical work .  As she grew her practice, Jane wanted more folks around her who would be able to support the isolation that comes from being a practice owner.

"Clinically I feel absolutely fine, the team feels fantastic, we've got a nice property, we're full of clients... and I feel like I'm on my own." says Jane Randall.

The Solution

Seeking structure without corporate bureaucracy, Jane joined the Private Practice MBA program led by Kay Frankcom and Natasha Ace.

1. Mapping Strategy Visually

To overcome her initial skepticism toward vision and mission exercises, Jane laid out a giant whiteboard on her ironing board at home, moving colored post-it notes to break down high-level business concepts into daily operational steps.

2. Operationalising Values

Rather than leaving values on a wall or website, Jane and her team applied them directly to clinical decision-making:

Kindness & Integrity: Re-evaluating long-term clients who were not making progress to determine if continuing therapy was truly in their best interest, or if alternative care was a more ethical outcome.

Accessibility: Designing low-sensory waiting spaces and accessible facilities for neurodivergent clients and NDIS participants.

3. Color-Coded Implementation

Jane bridged strategy to daily operations using a simple system:

-Green: Operational areas performing well.

-Yellow: Areas that are works-in-progress.

-Red: Priorities yet to be addressed.

The Results: Practice Growth, Recruitment, and Vision

Through systematic execution, Jane transformed both her practice operations and her business perspective:

What’s Next for Jane’s Practice?

Jane continues to build on her practice's foundations with a focus on:

1.  Purposeful Outcome Measurement: Gathering data to demonstrate treatment effectiveness for complex cohorts that standard metrics often fail to capture.

2. Visualizing Values: Integrating practice values visually into new office artwork and photography to create a welcoming environment for clients.

3. Advocacy & Leadership: Utilizing clinical data and practice insights to advocate for better mental health access across the broader healthcare community.
